Community Health Workers

A community health worker is a frontline public health worker who is a trusted member of and/or has an unusually close understanding of the community served. This trusting relationship enables the worker to serve as a liaison/link/intermediary between health/social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve service delivery's quality and cultural competence.  Community Health Workers also build individual and community capacity by increasing health knowledge and self-sufficiency through a range of activities such as outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support, and advocacy.

In North Carolina, CHWs have been the frontline workers providing education, support, and advocacy for communities during the Coronavirus pandemic.  This group of dedicated lay health workers has proven to be invaluable to the efforts of local and state health departments and has been vocal advocates for historically marginalized populations.  SEHCNC firmly believes that CHWs should be a permanent part of the healthcare delivery landscape, with the potential to reduce healthcare costs, improve community members' health and well-being, and close the gap in access and support for healthy living.

Health insurance providers and health systems can benefit from the appropriate integration of CHWs as part of an expanded healthcare team by providing comprehensive and people-centered care that is equitable, culturally appropriate, and economically feasible. It has been broadly documented that support, interventions, and education conducted by Community Health Workers have positively impacted clients' lives and health outcomes.  These programs have resulted in improved medication and dietary compliance, health outcomes, and significant cost savings derived from improved health and increased on-job productivity.
